Exciting Day for the New Comers to the Day Care Centres

Around here, we don’t look backwards for very long…
We keep moving forward,
opening up new doors and doing new things
because we’re curious…  and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”

The New Year 2017 January was a very exciting period for the Vanni children and the parents as they start schooling (Day Care Centres). The Centre for Holistic Healing has 09 day care centres in different areas in the Kilinochchi and Mullaitevu districts.  Most of the parents belong to the labour class. Thus majority of them were anxious to join  and started to get enrolled in November 2016  itself.
02Application forms were given to those who were interested in joining to know the background of the families. Interviews were held in all the centres to know the health condition of the children. Some new teachers who have got diploma in primary school education were also recruited and given special training.

Some Day Care Centres had to be scheduled from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm at the request of the parents as they go for labour work and harvesting. This time-change was very convenient for them to keep the children in a safe place until they are free to take them home.Breakfast,3  lunch and afternoon tea is provided for the kids.

Some of the children were happy to be with the other children. However, many were reluctant to be at the centre. The first day was made to be like a celebration with games, sweets, and presents like the first school book and stationary for the children.  Each child was called by his/her name to the front and honoured by garlands and flower bouquets. Some children sang songs and recited poems that they know.        4This made the children to get over the stress of being in the school the first day. The teachers have to be commended for the organization of this happy day which also paved way for the teachers to get to know the parents and make a good relationship.

The bible verse which says ‘The harvest is plenty but the labourers are few’ is real in the situation of our work among children. The centres need more furniture, toys, stationary, uniforms etc along with two meals a day. The Centre for Holistic Healing does the best it can to cater as many as possible.5
